Viareggio

Viareggio is a town in the province of Lucca in Tuscany and it is located on the Tyrrhenian coast at the mouth of the Channel Burlamacca.

The origin of the city dates back to the XV century. It was a city of sailors, mostly tied to the traditions of fishing. Beach tourism became important in the late XIX century with the construction in 1828 of the first two bathing establishments.

Viareggio is one of the most important seaside resort on the Tuscan coast, with a beach 10 km long and over 100 bathing establishments.

The city offers visitors a wide range of well equipped places for relaxation and fun. The town – home of famous people such as Lorenzo Viani, the composer Giacomo Puccini and the writer Mario Tobin – is surrounded by hills and it is close to the Apuan Alps and the lake Massaciuccoli, providing a unique mix offering a particular landscape made of seas and mountains, green and blue.

Along the coast it is also possible to admire the colourful harbour, shipyards and a long promenade with superb shops, cinemas and a theatre.

In Viareggio it is held in February one of the most famous carnivals in Italy, which ends with the usual parade, considered of great importance.

The city has two pinewoods. One is located in the city centre and is known by the name of Pineta di Ponente. This has all the characteristics of a public park.

The other is called Pineta di Levante. It begins at the port, extending for 6 miles up to Torre del Lago This is a still untouched pine forest with lush vegetation and thick undergrowth.

The Viale dei Tigli is a magnificent panoramic avenue crossing the pine wood in its full length.
