Island of Elba

The island of Elba is an island situated between the Ligurian and the Tyrrhenian Sea, located about 10 kilometers far from the coast of the continent.

It is the largest island in the Tuscan Archipelago, and the third largest in Italy (223 km ²). Elba, along with other islands (Pianosa, Capraia, Gorgona, Montecristo, Giglio and Giannutri) is part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park.

The island is divided into eight municipalities: the main one is Portoferraio, the others are Campo nell’Elba, Capoliveri, Marciana, Marciana Marina, Porto Azzurro, Rio Marina and Rio nell’Elba, for a total of about 30 thousand inhabitants, which considerably increases during the summer.

Its coast stretches for 147 km.. It is possible to go to Elba by ferry in 1 hour or with hydrofoil or speed boat in 30-40 minutes from Piombino.

There is also the airport of Pila in Marina di Campo where small planes land. Favored by tourists, Italians and Europeans, the Isle of Elba boasts modern and equipped bathing establishments and tourist structures.

Besides the natural beauty of this wonderful sea made of more than 10 km. of sand beaches, 3 km of gravel beaches and 4 swimming reefs there are available sports facilities, swimming pools, golf, riding stables, playgrounds for adults and children, offshore fishing, rentals, hiking, etc. ..

Discovering by boat dozens and dozens of creeks is always a surprise. The Isle of Elba is small, without being too little, and it is well-organized.

It still retains a natural setting because of its location in the national park. The sea around it is currently the largest marine park in Europe.

Portoferraio is the main city and the main port of the island. It is located on the northeastern coast on a promontory overlooking a bay which takes its name from the city.
