Tourist Travel Guide to Holidays in Tuscany

Casentino is a beautiful valley located in the province of Arezzo. Here by Monte Falterona the Arno River starts its flowing and the valley offers a nature made of mountains covered with lush forests of beech and oak trees, and then degrade to the hilly areas with some flat areas. Many areas of Casentino, are in the famous Park of Casentino Forests, a protected area rich in unique flora and fauna, unspoiled woods among the best preserved in Italy, definitely worth visiting.

In this quiet and almost supernatural peace there are two of the most popular religious shrines: the hermitage of Camaldoli and the Sanctuary of La Verna, both hosting many religious pilgrims all over the year.

Casentino is valuable both for its unspoiled nature and for its many castles. The Castle of Poppi was the residence of the Counts Guidi and is formed by fortified walls; the Castle of Porciano is complemented by a medieval village that surrounds above the village of Stia. Yet the family Guidi were the proprietors of the Castle of Romena, with fourteen towers and three surrounding walls, placed in a dominant position to monitor the whole Casentino.

Important cities and villages of the area are: Bibbiena, Capolona, Castel San Niccolò, Chiusi della Verna, Pratovecchio, Subbiano, Stia and Poppi. In each of these places visitors can enjoy wonderful dishes created with the excellent local products, such as porcini mushrooms here of exceptional quality and the finest truffles.

Casentino has a good assortment of small and big hotels concentrated in the most populated areas, but the area is also dotted with a number of farmhouses and B & B where it is possible to spend less and still have a nice stay. There are also small structures such as houses or holiday apartments.

To visit the Park of Casentino visitors can follow short trails with 9 runs, 3 of which begins in areas easily accessible of Tuscany. For more information call the Office for Tourism in Arezzo 0039 0575 377678.
