The oasis of Bolgheri

Bolgheri is located in the municipality of Castagneto Carducci and lies at the heart of Livorno Maremma, on the foothills of the Metalliferous Hills.

The village has developed around the medieval castle (widely modified over the centuries) that stands on a small hill reachable with the beautiful Avenue of Cypresses.

The avenue is a long road beginning nearly five kilometres downstream, on the Via Aurelia, just before the eighteenth century Oratory of San Guido.

This site was made famous by the verses of the poet Giosuè Carducci titled “In front of San Guido” (1874).

The monumental cemetery is located inside the village where the grandmother of the poet was buried.

Not far from the town, at almost 400 meters above sea level, lies the ancient fortified center of Castiglioncello di Bolgheri.

Bolgeri is also famous thanks to his oasis: The oasis of Bolgheri.

It was established in 1959 and was the first Italian private oasis, thanks to the Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, one of the founder of WWF Italy.

The area of Bolgheri has a rectangular surface of approximately 50 sq km and stretches along the coast for about 4.4 km.

The terrain is mostly covered by woods, olive trees and beautiful vineyards, while the part between the Via Aurelia and the sea, occupied until last century from a coastal lake now disappeared, is now covering the territory of the oasis of Bolgheri.

It has an area of 518 hectares, while the part turned into a wildlife refuge is approximately 100 hectares.

The park still preserves the characteristics of the Maremma before the reclamation implemented during the XIX century: in addition to the swamp, home to thick reeds, there are junipers, pines, oaks and ash trees.

The reserve is animated by a large fauna, consisting of deer, rabbits, squirrels, starlings, peregrine falcons, owls, cranes, ducks, etc..

The oasis is open to the public from October to April, by appointment only.

The visit to the oasis is possible on Fridays and Saturdays, in two daily shifts, one at 9:00 and another at 14:00.
